Help. What did I do wrong to my freehub? (And cheapest options from here)

Middling experience here, bikes an old haro extreme mtb.. After coasting, the pedals would spin way too far before engaging, so I figured the freehub needed service. Hub says shimano fh550. Took it off, but didn't have the tool to open it up all the way, but seeing as how some people refresh...
