BB Spacer question

My wife's touring bike has external BB bearings and her drivetrain is a Rohloff. I am going to install a SKS Chainguard that is attached behind the BB.
My question is it currently has 1 "plastic" spacer. In order to maintain the exact same chainline I have a metal spacer that along with the Chainguard will = the "plastic" spacer. Is it a problem to have metal as opposed to plastic?
