Why so many Trek Bikes out there?

Everywhere I ride. Every time Im somewhere others are riding I see lots of Trek bicycles.
Appears to be more Trek bikes out on the roads and trails than other brands. Is this true? And why do people like Trek so much? I have never owned a Trek myself.
