Minimize Chrome Cracking on Vintage Shifters Band?

I have a set of Nuovo Record shifters with some tiny cracks in the chrome band on one side. And of course it arrived in closed position. When I'm ready to install it- is there a trick to opening and closing it again to minized the risk of further damage? Just curious.
