Trek Alpha 1.2 Handlebar conversion help needed

Looking for some advice on switching the drop bars on a Trek Alpha 1.2 to flat bars. This is my brother in law's bike. He had a stroke a few years ago so he's a little weak on his right side. I just rebuilt his Schwinn Super Sport for him but he can't handle that heavy of a bike, or the drop bars....
