what is idea tire type for 26er with drops

I am using a smaller knobby tire VeeRubber kinda like them but they are not all that road friendly and I go 50/50 road to dirt road/rails trails. I want something with some grip but do not require knobbies

Any suggestions? Also how small is appropriate I never road a 26 inch tire smaller that 1.9....
