Team Prince Edward Island sails to first win at 2026 Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships
For athletes who may not have had the privilege to yet don their provincial or territorial jacket, it’s a universal understanding that you never forget your first national championship.
And for so many of the young players this week at the 2026 Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships, hosted at the McIntyre Curling Club in Timmins, Ont., it’s their first time ever setting foot on national championship ice.
That’s the case for Team Prince Edward Island skip Grace Myers, (1-3; Cornwall), who alongside third/vice skip Greta Edgett-Gallant, second Norah MacKinnon, lead Lily Whalley, and coach Darren Gallant, not only are playing in their first national championship, but earned their first win to the tune of 9-0 performance over Team Nunavut’s Arianna Atienza (0-4; Iqaluit) Tuesday afternoon.
Myers’ Cornwall Curling Club cohort are delighted to have collected a win despite being national championship rookies.
“It feels good,” said Myers. “We weren’t expecting to do well, just kind of come here to have fun and earn experience.”
Myers says that prior to the event starting, the measure of success for Team Prince Edward Island was never going to be found on the standings board.
“Just try our best,” said Myers about her team’s primary goal. “Just try to keep the scores close. It was a goal to try to get a win, but it wasn’t our main goal. It was to just come have fun and get some experience.”
Team Prince Edward Island maintained steady pressure throughout the duration of the match versus Team Nunavut, and despite not having the hammer in the first, opened with a steal of two. The confederation province continued to place its rocks in quality spots en route nine stolen points for the win in just six ends of play.
Despite the commanding win, the level of competition at the U-18 championship is a welcome change of pace for Myers.
“There’s only three (U-18) teams on P.E.I., really,” said Myers. “It’s a big difference. There are really good teams here.”
Team Prince Edward Island will next face Team Alberta #2’s Alena Yurko (; Red Deer/Leduc) Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., (all times Eastern), and doesn’t plan to change -its gameplan coming off the win.
“I think we just keep going how we’ve been going,” said Myers. “Trying to make all our shots. Just have some fun.”
Action resumes this evening at the 2026 Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships with nine sheets of play at 6:30 p.m.
