Team Northern Ontario #2 collects second consecutive win at 2026 Canadian U-18 Championships
TIMMINS, ONT. — After dropping its opening draw at the 2026 Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships, Team Northern Ontario #2’s Jacob Curtis (2-1; Thunder Bay) has found a way to right the ship on its 2026 U-18 campaign, collecting an 8-1 win over Team Prince Edward Island’s Aaron Haight (0-2; Cornwall) on Monday afternoon.
The win marks the team’s second-straight victory at the U-18s, hosted at the McIntyre Curling Club in Timmins, Ont., previously downing Team Saskatchewan #2’s Quinn Snow (1-2; Saskatoon) 6-2 in Sunday evening’s contest to mark its first win.
“It feels great,” said Curtis. “It’s our first event and we’re just really excited to be here.”
There were no rookie jitters present for the Port Arthur Curling Club squadron, made up of third/vice-skip Warren Stroud, second Owen Weiss, lead Kain Cristofaro, and coach Gary Weiss, who leveraged offence early and often in the Monday afternoon tilt. The team exploded for eight points in just four ends of play in the six-end contest.
“Just a lot of key shots that we were making,” said Curtis of his team’s success thus far. “I think we’re playing solid throughout this week and we’re going to keep it up.”
The shot making speaks for itself and Curtis says his team is very comfortable out under the bright lights of the national championship stage; especially adorned in a host-province Northern Ontario jacket.
“There are a lot of fans out here supporting us,” said Curtis. “It’s been a great event so far and we’re just having a great time.”
Curtis is keeping his expectations high, but in check, as the team continues to heat up on the ice.
“Honestly, I think our goal is to just make playoffs, and we’ll go from there,” said Curtis.
The unit will have time for a rest Monday evening before being back on the ice Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 9:30 a.m., (all times Eastern) to take on last year’s U-18 Canadian male silver medallist Team Ontario #1, skipped by Tyler MacTavish (2-0; Waterloo).
The top four ranked teams in each of the three pools will advance to a playoff bracket based on win-loss records. The top four seeded teams of the twelve qualifiers receive a bye to a quarterfinal match, while ranks 5-12 play an elimination bracket match that feeds into the quarterfinals.
Action resumes this evening at the 2026 Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships with nine sheets of play at 6:30 p.m.
