Team Northwest Territories dominant in 9-1 win over Team Québec at 2025 Seniors

0 15

If you want a bonafide way to win a curling game, the recipe is simple: score early and often.

It’s an execution plan that Team Northwest Territories’ Sharon Cormier (1-1) followed to a tee on Sunday afternoon at the 2025 Canadian Senior Curling Championships from the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club, and one that earned her Yellowknife Curling Centre squadron a 9-1 win over Team Québec’s Nathalie Gagnon (0-2; Chicoutimi) in six ends.

Cormier, alongside vice-skip Cheryl Tordoff, second Marta Moir, and lead Kelly Kaylo, were strong out of the gate in the feature match, securing an early 3-0 lead after two ends thanks to a single in the first and then a steal of two in the second.

It would prove indicative of what was to come, as Team Northwest Territories kept the pressure on and led 4-1 at the break.

Team Québec would fight back, however. In the fifth, Team Northwest Territories faced two Team Québec counters with last rock, where Cormier’s sweepers championed a potential game-saving sweep on a draw that barely edged out the opposition counters. It was a potential three-point swing that never came to fruition.

The game’s biggest blow came in the sixth, where relentless pressure from Team Northwest Territories manifested itself into a steal of four. Team Québec conceded the match shortly thereafter, resulting in a 9-1 final.

In other women’s action from Sunday afternoon, Team Nova Scotia’s Andrea Saulnier (2-0; Kentville) bested Team Manitoba 8-3 while Team British Columbia’s Shiella Cowan (2-0; New Westminster) beat Team Northern Ontario’s Valerie MacInnes (0-2; Schumacher) 7-2. Team Saskatchewan’s Amber Holland (2-0; Saskatoon) downed Team Yukon’s Rhonda Horte (0-1; Whitehorse) 5-4 while Team Ontario’s Sherry Middaugh (2-0; Barrie) overcame Team Newfoundland and Labrador’s Jody Saunders (0-1; St. John’s) 8-4 and Team Alberta’s Delia DeJong (1-1; Okotoks) won over Team Prince Edward Island’s Shelly Bradley (1-1; Cornwall) 8-7.

In men’s action Sunday morning, Team Nova Scotia’s Alan O’Leary (1-0; Bridgewater) won a maritime showdown against Team Prince Edward Island’s Eddie MacKenzie 9-8. Team New Brunswick’s James Grattan (1-1; Saint John) earned its first win over Team Alberta’s James Pahl 6-4 while Team British Columbia’s Neil Dangerfield (2-0; Victoria) stayed perfect, downing Team Northern Ontario’s Al Harnden (1-1; Sault Ste. Marie) 8-6. Team Ontario’s Mike Harris (2-0; Brantford) doubled up Team Newfoundland and Labrador’s Keith Ryan (1-1; Labrador City) 8-4 while Team Québec’s Robert Desjardins (1-1; Chicoutimi) defeated Team Nunavut’s Peter Mackey (0-2; Iqaluit) 6-3 and Team Northwest Territories’ Greg Skauge (1-1; Yellowknife) edged out Team Yukon’s Robert Smallwood (0-2; Whitehorse) 7-6.

The top four in each pool then advance to the Championship Pool for crossover games beginning Thursday, Dec. 4, against teams from the other pool, while the remaining teams go to the Seeding Pool.

After the Championship Pool round robin wraps up on Friday, Dec. 5, the playoffs will start Saturday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m. with the semifinals, pairing the first-seeded team against the fourth-seeded team and the second- and third-ranked teams in the second semifinal.

The winners advance to their respective gold-medal final, while the losers will play for bronze. The medal games for both genders will be at 3 p.m.

Action from the 2025 Canadian Senior Curling Championships resumes this evening at 6 p.m., (all times Eastern).
