Canadian Mixed Curling Championship returns to Prince Edward Island after 30 years

0 16

The Canadian Mixed Curling Championship is returning to Prince Edward Island for the first time in three decades, Curling Canada announced today.

The West Prince Curling Club at Mill River in Woodstock, P.E.I., will host the 2026 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship from Nov. 8-14, 2026.

“The Canadian Mixed Curling Championship has been a long-standing national showcase for our sport for life pathway and how these events support clubs across the country. It is fitting to have this national championship hosted at one of Canada’s newest facilities,” said Curling Canada CEO Nolan Thiessen. “Newly built curling clubs are an investment in the future of our sport and the communities they serve. We can’t want to see the West Prince Curling Club shine on the national stage.”

The brand-new 21,000-square-foot curling facility opened in April 2024 and has quickly become a hallmark of the provincial curling community. It features four sheets of ice supported by energy-efficient equipment, spacious clubhouse seating, a commercial kitchen and bar area, locker rooms, and wheelchair accessibility. Designed for year-round use, the new club stands as a major investment in local sport infrastructure and a testament to the region’s strong curling tradition.

Last season, the West Prince Curling Club hosted the 2025 men’s, women’s, juniors, and U-15 provincial championships.

Now, in 2026, it will welcome 14 teams from across the country – 10 provinces, three territories, and Northern Ontario – vying for the historic Canadian mixed title at an event that has been played annually since 1964.

“The 2026 Mixed Curling Championship is an exciting opportunity to welcome athletes and fans to our beautiful province. Curling has a proud tradition here and events like this bring communities together and display our Island spirit,” said Ernie Hudson, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure and MLA for District 26, Alberton – Bloomfield. “It’s an honour to host this here in West Prince.  We look forward to sharing our warm hospitality and love of curling with visitors from across the country.”

“Hosting the 2026 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in West Prince is a tremendous opportunity to showcase the region’s hospitality and charm. As the first major national event at the West Prince Curling Club, it marks an exciting milestone for the facility,” said the Honourable Zack Bell, Minister of Fisheries, Tourism, Sport and Culture. “Events like this bring communities together, boost local businesses, and reinforce Prince Edward Island’s reputation as a premier destination for sport tourism. We look forward to welcoming athletes and curling fans from across the country in November 2026.”

The facility is situated on Mill River Resort, a top-rated vacation destination in the province, offering golf, spas, and a sportsplex that features an indoor pool and courts for squash and basketball.

“It’s an honour for Mill River Resort to host the athletes, officials, and fans of the 2026 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship. With the new West Prince Curling Club on our property, participants can stay just steps away from the rink,” Geoffrey Irving, President, Mill River Resort. “This event is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our world-class facilities and the hospitality that make Mill River such a special destination. We look forward to providing a warm and memorable experience for all who visit.”

The community-run curling facility is the newest in Prince Edward Island, combining two other clubs from the province’s western region.

“We are thrilled and deeply honoured to be selected by Curling Canada to host the 2026 National Mixed Championships. This is an incredible opportunity to showcase our community, our volunteers, and our passion for curling on a national stage,” said Lin Walker, General Manager of the West Prince Curling Club. “We look forward to welcoming athletes, officials, and fans from across the country for an unforgettable championship experience in 2026.”

The last time Prince Edward Island hosted the Canadian mixed dates back to 1996 at the Charlottetown Curling Club, an event won by Saskatchewan’s Team Randy Bryden. The province hosted the event in 1973 in Charlottetown, won by Manitoba’s Team Barry Fry.

In 1987, the event was hosted in Summerside, P.E.I., where an Islander team skipped by Peter Gallant won the province’s first Canadian mixed title.

Prince Edward Island has won two other Canadian mixed titles, both led by skip Robert Campbell: in 1989 at Brandon, Man., and in 2011 at Morris, Man.

“Prince Edward Island is establishing itself as a top destination for major curling events, and we can’t wait to welcome athletes and fans to the West Prince region,” said Curl PEI Executive Director Amy Duncan. “Events such as this one will leave a legacy in the community and help inspire future curlers along the way.”

The province has been a hotspot for Canadian curling championships over the past few years. In 2025, Summerside hosted the New Holland Canadian U-20 Championships. Charlottetown will welcome fans from across the country for the 2027 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Alberta and Saskatchewan have each won the Canadian mixed a leading 11 times each.
