2025 Canadian Curling Club Championships start Tuesday at Winnipeg’s Granite Club

0 13

Canada’s top club curling teams will gather at one Canada’s most historic curling clubs when the 2025 Canadian Curling Club Championships get underway Tuesday in Winnipeg.

The Granite Curling Club, which opened for business in 1913, will host 14 women’s and 14 men’s teams in the 16th edition of the Canadian Curling Club Championships.

Ticket information as well as details on the Opening and Closing Ceremonies are available by CLICKING HERE.

The event features club championship teams, and is aimed at grassroots players who want the opportunity to compete for a national championship but don’t have time or resources to commit to a high performance pathway.

Which isn’t to say there’s not an abundance of talent that will be on display at the facility known popularly as The Mother Club for Curling, as two former world champions will be on the ice in men’s competition.

Ontario skip Bryan Cochrane skipped Canada to gold at the 2019 World Senior Championships in Stavanger, Norway, but he’ll have an entirely different team from the Russell Curling Club consisting of family members with him in Winnipeg. Sons Ryan (vice-skip) and Jamie (second) will be joined by Bryan’s brother-in-law Paul Nooyen (lead) in trying to defend the title won by Ontario in 2024. Richmond Hill’s Team Jordan Keon claimed gold last year in Barrie, Ont. Alternate Pierre Harvey will round out the Ontario team in Winnipeg.

Meanwhile, Alberta’s Team Sterling Hansen from the Calgary Curling Club features Sean Morris at vice-skip. Morris threw lead rocks for Colin Davison’s Canadian and World junior men’s champions in 1994.

On the women’s side, Nova Scotia will be looking for back-to-back gold, with Team Jennifer Connell representing the Berwick Curling Club wearing the provincial colours. A year ago in Barrie, it was Team Michelle Armstrong of the Lakeshore Curling Club in Lower Sackville taking gold.

The annual For the Love of Curling fundraising challenge to benefit youth curling across Canada will once again be a part of the 2025 Canadian Curling Club Championships. Teams will be involved in fundraising, and the teams that raise the most money for junior curling will earn up to a $2,100 grant for their home clubs.

The Canadian Curling Club Championships began in 2009 in Toronto. Since then, Ontario teams have won the men’s title five times, while Alberta has four, B.C. and Saskatchewan have each claimed two titles and Newfoundland & Labrador and Nova Scotia each have one.

On the women’s side, Manitoba leads the way with four championships, followed by Ontario and Alberta with three apiece, New Brunswick at two, and Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Northern Ontario with single championships.

The fields divided into two pools of seven teams. After the round robin, the top three teams in each pool will make a modified double-knockout playoffs, which begin Saturday, Nov. 22, and conclude with the gold- and bronze-medal games on Sunday, Nov. 23.
