2024 U18 Provincials Recap
The Prince Albert Golf and Curling Centre hosted the 2024 Under-18 Provincials from December 27–30, just before the New Year. The event brought together nine U18 women’s teams and six U18 men’s teams to compete for the prestigious green jacket and the opportunity to represent Saskatchewan at the 2025 Canadian U18 Championships, set to take place at the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon from February 16–27, 2025.
Men’s Division
Team Wiess celebrated their first-ever U18 Provincial Championship victory! They showcased exceptional performance throughout the weekend, finishing the round robin with a 4-1 record to secure a playoff berth. In the 1v2 playoff game, they faced a strong challenge from Team Derksen but emerged victorious with a decisive 7-1 win, earning a spot in the final. Meanwhile, Team Derksen battled Team Heisler in the semi-final, where Team Heisler triumphed 7-3 to advance.
The final match was a thrilling contest between Team Wiess and Team Heisler. Team Wiess clinched the title of “Team Saskatchewan” with a 6-4 victory.
Team Wiess: Skip Brandon Wiess, third Josh Lussier, second Carter Nelson, lead Elijah Chomos, and coach Mark Wiess. They curl out of the Esterhazy Curling Club.
Additionally, with Saskatchewan serving as host for the Canadian Championship, the province was granted a second berth. Congratulations to Team Heisler for their runner-up finish and for being named Team Saskatchewan #2!
Team Heisler: Skip Dayne Heisler, third Blake Montgomery, second Riley Cushway, lead Laine Burnham, and coach Rod Montgomery. They curl out of the Moose Jaw Curling Centre.
Women’s Division
Team Hogeboom earned their first green jackets in a memorable run to the championship! After advancing to the playoffs through the B-Event, they faced Team Wood, the A-Event qualifiers. In their initial encounter, Team Wood secured a 7-4 win to advance to the final, while Team Hogeboom dropped to the semi-final to face Team Semeniuk. In a nail-biting match, Team Hogeboom edged out Team Semeniuk 8-7 to set up a rematch against Team Wood in the final.
This time, Team Hogeboom delivered an outstanding performance, claiming a 7-3 victory and their first U18 Provincial title.
Team Hogeboom: Skip Kaylee Hogeboom, third Payton Fisher, second Abby Hogeboom, lead Callista McQueen, alternate Kelsey McQueen, and coach Barb Owens. They curl out of the Moose Jaw Curling Centre.
Additionally, with Saskatchewan serving as host for the Canadian Championship, the province was granted a second berth. Congratulations to Team Heisler for their runner-up finish and for being named Team Saskatchewan #2!
Team Wood: Skip Renee Wood, third Edie Jardine, second Amelia Whiting, lead Winnie Morin, and coach Dwayne Yachiw. They curl out of the Sutherland Curling Club in Saskatoon.
