Team Sask Brings Home Bronze
Team Saskatchewan Claims Bronze Medal at the 2021 Tim Hortons Brier
Matt Dunstone’s Wadena based team proved to be one of Canada’s top curling teams after an excellent week at the 2021 Tim Hortons Brier, presented by AGI.
After taking home a Bronze Medal at the 2020 Canadian men’s curling championship, Dunstone, third Braeden Moskowy, second Kirk Muyres, lead Dustin Kidby, and Coach Adam Kingsbury added more hardware to their collection, capturing a Bronze Medal and $40,000 at the 2021 Brier.
Through 8 ends of play in an exciting Semi Final match up, Team Saskatchewan was left down by 1 heading into the 9th end. After the dust settled in 9, Team Saskatchewan picked up a deuce and was up 4-3 heading into the final end. In the 10th end with hammer, Team Alberta skip Brendan Bottcher made a precise run back on his last to score 2 points and win the Semi Final.
“There’s nothing to hang our heads about; it was a world-class game,” said Dunstone. “They played awesome, we played awesome, and the curling gods were wearing a blue sweater today. That’s all there is to it. Totally stinks, but this isn’t the end of us. We’ll come back stronger. You keep putting yourself in these sorts of situations, you’re going to succeed eventually. That’s all we can really do. It’s meant to be at some point.”
Following the difficult loss, skip, Matt Dunstone displayed tremendous perspective in middle of the global pandemic.
“To be able to feel all the emotions again — how lucky are we to actually be here right now, competing, and playing on the biggest possible stage?” he said. “I know it’s upsetting right now, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s really a blessing to be out here competing in a global pandemic, when there are so many other things going on in the world. Pretty thankful for the experience.”
Second, Kirk Muyres, explains how this is just the beginning for the team and the best is yet to come.
“We just played a really really good game. Did everything we could as a team, just kept together as a unit and when our last one come to rest, Deuce (lead Dustin Kidby) and I said to each other, well we did all we could,” said Kirk. “I think if you come to bat every year and every chance we get, and we’ll crack through one of these years, I have no doubt.”
Braeden Moskowy Announced as First Team All-Star
CURLSASK would like to congratulate Braeden Moskowy on receiving First Team All-Star at the Brier! Braeden shot an outstanding 89% this week and was ranked 1st among thirds in shooting percentages. The All-Star Awards are awarded based on shooting percentages and a media vote.
Season Not Over Yet
Team Dunstone’s season is not over yet. The team from the Wadena RE/MAX Curling Club will compete in 2 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling in the Calgary bubble in April. The Humpty’s Champions Cup will take place April 14-18, and the Princess Auto Players’ Championship runs April 20-25 from WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park.
