2020/21 Curling Season President’s Message

0 4

Hello ACC members.  I hope you are all doing well.

It seems like a very long 5 months ago when our curling season came to an abrupt end in the middle of March due to the C-19 situation. Now with a new season fast approaching , I hope you are gearing up for what will be a very different curling season starting the second week of November.

In my last message on July 11, I told you that the club was establishing a committee to review COVID19 related issues and develop recommendations to the ACC Executive, and I asked you a series of questions so we could determine the level of interest in a curling season for 2020-2021.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to answer and return the questions.  It was great to see that so many of you want to come back to curling this year and that you realize that the “rules” will be different.  Thanks also for your confidence in the COVID Committee and the Executive to develop Guidelines for the club.

The ACC COVID committee has reviewed Curl Canada and Curling Ontario guidelines along with the Ontario Phase III protocols, the Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit COVID-19 guidelines, the municipality’s requirements, and your questionnaire responses, and has recommended Guidelines which have been approved by the ACC Executive.  The document will soon be posted on our website,  which describes how the game will be played at the ACC this season.

The Guidelines aim to provide us all with a safe and enjoyable curling season.  We’ll start with these Guidelines and will review and update them as things change over the season.

Some highlights (see the Guidelines for details):

  • We’ve worked with arena staff to confirm cleaning standards and have tried our best to ensure safety and to remove unnecessary touch points. You’ll see that the shoe cleaners, bottled water dispensers, scoreboard numbers and club equipment have been removed.
  • For now, only the ice surface is available, with the lounge use limited to preparing to be on the ice.
  • Draws will be organized into PODS, a group of curlers playing together twice weekly. Please see the registration information sheet for full details.
  • We will follow Curl Ontario’s positioning guidance, and the new configuration will be in marked the ice so we know the new setup.
  • Games will be 6 ends to allow for cleaning between draws.

Since there won’t be any in-club bonspiels, junior program or Learn-to-Curl this year, we won’t be applying our volunteer opt-out fee this year.  That doesn’t mean that we don’t need you!  We’ll still need members to step up for ice maintenance as usual.  We’ll also need volunteers to help manage PODS (similar to drop-in curling league coordinators) and . . .  If you’d like to help out please email almonte@ovca.com.

In addition to the Guidelines, we’ve posted related documents and registration information on our webpage.  Please take a look, and if you have any questions send them to almonte@ovca.com.  We’ll be reviewing the questions and setting up an FAQ page with answers for all members to see.

Registration is September 17 and 19 on the ice surface at the club to ensure physical distancing.  We’ll make a final decision about whether the season is going forward based on our numbers after registration, so if you’re planning to curl this year, don’t wait.

Looking forward to seeing you.  We are the ACC!
