Carlsen looking to repeat his Grenke Chess performance

Defending champion Magnus Carlsen headlines a star-studded field. Fresh from his recent triumph in the 2026 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship, the Norwegian superstar returns to Karlsruhe aiming to build on his legendary 9/9 perfect score from 2025. Joining him are top contenders including Vincent Keymer, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Levon Aronian, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Jan-Krzysztof Duda, among dozens of grandmasters rated over 2700. The Freestyle Open boasts a €215,000 prize fund, with approximately €60,000 earmarked for first place in the A section. The parallel classical open offers €70,000, bringing the combined festival prize pool to around €285,000.

This year’s Freestyle Open carries unprecedented importance. For the first time, the tournament serves as an official qualifier for the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027. The winner of the top section (Open A) secures a direct spot in the prestigious event, while the top three women in the same section earn qualification for the 2026 FIDE Freestyle Women’s World Championship. Both the Freestyle and classical opens run as nine-round Swiss-system competitions with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment per move. Players may switch between the two formats up to round five.

The schedule features two rounds on most days, with Round 1 beginning on Thursday evening. Final rounds and the awards ceremony are set for Monday, April 6. As the first moves unfold in this record-breaking edition, all eyes remain on whether Carlsen can dominate once more or if a new champion, and future world championship contender, will emerge from the packed hall in Karlsruhe. For live games, standings, and full details, stay tuned to Chessdom.com and its Twitter/X account.
