Other Events: The World Junior Championship

0

I may not cover the event any further than to offer this mention en passant, but it is worth a mention. So: the World Junior Championship is well underway, and after eight rounds of 11 A. Tari of Norway leads with 7 points, half a point better than Kirill Alekseenko of Russia and India's Pragnanandhaa Rameshbabu. P.R. is in the running to become the youngest GM in chess history. He's currently 12 years and three months old, giving him three months and change to break Sergey Karjakin's long-running record - Karjakin was 12 years and 7 months old when he set the extant record back in 2002. As far as I know, P.R. doesn't have any norms (though he has achieved the other necessary element, a rating that has passed 2500 at some moment). If he gets one here, he'll need two more - unless he wins the tournament outright. In that case, he is awarded the title directly.
