Flash Flood Warnings Issued as 70 mph Winds, Large Hail Expected

0 2

The National Weather Service has confirmed that heavy downpour could lead to severe flash floods in the American South this week, with heavy winds and large hail also causing damage to property.

An official warning was issued around 2 a.m. on Thursday, May 7, stating that Southern Harris County and Northern Muscogee County in Georgia are under severe threat of flooding due to several large thunderstorms drifting over the region.

The flooding is most likely to occur on the early morning of May 7, making travel extremely difficult for commuters. Individuals are advised to remain indoors where possible and steer clear of open water sources like rivers and lakes.

The NWS reported that upwards of three inches of rain have already fallen in Georgia, which could make driving conditions more unstable and lead to increased water levels that may damage property. Animals should also be kept indoors wherever possible to avoid injury.

This increased rainfall will continue throughout the day, with at least two more inches of rain expected by the afternoon. These downpour levels make flash flooding extremely likely, even if the effects will only be temporary.

The NWS announced a full list of counties that are at risk of facing flash floods:

  • Waverly Hall, Bibb City, Upatoi, Fortson, Cataula, Flat Rock, Mulberry Grove, Midland, Ellerslie, Columbus Metropolitan Airport, Kenwood, Laurel Hills, Edgewood, Green Island Hills, Highland Park, Mountain Hill, Rose Hill, Goat Rock Lake, and Lake Harding.

The warning advises residents living in these counties to turn around if they encounter any flooded roads and report the disturbance. "Most flood deaths occur in vehicles," they add.

While these floods are more likely to happen during the early hours of the morning, those travelling particularly early should also make sure to bring a flashlight for enhanced visibility, as darkness makes it harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

"It is important to know where you are relative to streams, rivers, or creeks, which can become killers in heavy rains. Campers and hikers should avoid streams or creeks."

Individuals travelling under flash flood conditions should consider making a storm travel kit containing survival equipment in case the vehicle becomes stuck or damaged. This should include food, water, a flashlight, and first aid equipment.
