Iconic Quentin Tarantino Film Getting Sequel Without His Involvement

Quentin Tarantino has been one of the most beloved filmmakers over the past 30 years since his debut film, Reservoir Dogs, was released in 1992. Since then, Tarantino, who writes and directs all of his movies, has made his signature style iconic with films like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and Inglourious Basterds.

The legendary director's most recent work, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, premiered in 2019 with an all-time star-studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. The love letter to 1960s Hollywood earned 10 Academy Award nominations and a win for Pitt as Rick Dalton's (DiCaprio) stunt double, Cliff Booth.

A story that almost no one could have predicted would come from Tarantino but now is one of his most beloved, is 2012’s Django Unchained. Starring Jamie Foxx as Django, the bloody film follows the journey of a slave-turned-bounty hunter in the 19th-century American South to free his wife from slave owners, alongside the help of a German bounty hunter played by Christoph Waltz. DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson star as the primary antagonists: the slave owner keeping Django’s wife, played by Kerry Washington, captive, and the complex and cruel right-hand man who is technically still a slave himself.

Monday, Deadline reported that the iconic film officially has a sequel crossover in development, but Tarantino will not write or direct. From Academy Award-winning writer Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, Mystic River) will come Django/Zorro.

Tarantino originally created the concept for Django’s story to continue, crossing over with the famous hero Zorro, which was published as a seven-issue comic book story in 2014, co-written with Eisner Award winner Matt Wagner. This story served as the official sequel to Django Unchained.

The script for Django/Zorro, still in early development, will reportedly focus on a young Zorro and will not be a direct adaptation of the 2014 comic.

A director is not attached to the project, and at this time, it is unclear if Jamie Foxx will reprise his role.

Though Tarantino will not be at the helm of this project so personal to him, it is reported that the director has given his full blessing.
