Netflix Quietly Cancels New Movie After Star Actress Drops Out
Late last year the entertainment world learned Netflix was cancelling the Duffer Brothers' next show after their decision to leave the streaming giant for new opportunities at Paramount.
The Duffer Brothers burst onto the entertainment scene with their hit show Stranger Things that has broken records time and time again.
The debut of the fifth season of the iconic show earned nearly 60 million views in its first five days of streaming – the highest number for premiere-week viewership of an English-language Netflix series and the third-highest debut week viewership overall.
The star of that show, Millie Bobby Brown, also recently had a movie canceled by the streaming giant – though the move appears to have been her decision.
Netflix Cancels 'Perfect' After Mille Bobby Brown Drops Out
Netflix's sports drama Perfect was scraped by the streaming platform after Brown dropped out, according to Deadline, which reported Brown’s departure had to do with creative differences with producers.
Gia Coppola was initially in line to direct the film, but left the project earlier this year and was replaced by Cate Shortland. The film was set to follow Kerri Strug, a member of the 1996 USA women’s gymnastics team dubbed “the Magnificent Seven,” who played a huge role in clinching the team gold after performing the vault on a badly injured ankle.
"A Kerri Strug biopic, that tells the true story of the gymnast’s triumph against the odds to win Team USA’s first gold medal at the 1996 Olympics," the synopsis for the movie reads. "Strug was hailed as an American hero when she completed her final vault at the Atlanta games on a badly injured ankle to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat."
Netflix Still Has Millie Bobby Brown Projects Coming
While Netflix opted to cancel the new movie, it's still very interested in keeping Brown busy.
Her new film Enola Holmes 3 is set to hit later this year and Netflix also has a number of films in development at the studio with Brown attached to star that include Just Picture It and Nineteen Steps – adapted from her debut novel.
