Beloved 1,000-Pound Alligator Dies at Florida Wildlife Park

Buddy, the largest alligator at Gatorland in Orlando, has died. He lived and entertained guests at the theme park and nature preserve for decades. Buddy was estimated to be between 60 and 70 years old.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we share the passing of Buddy, the biggest alligator in Gatorland history,” the park shared. “At 13’ 8’ and almost 1,000 pounds, Buddy barely ‘edged out' ol’ Chester as the biggest gator at Gatorland a few years ago.”

A Living Legend

Buddy simply died of old age, but he was considered a legend among his fans.

In addition, the Facebook post from Gatorland said the following:

“Buddy wasn’t just big, he was a legend. A real Florida OG (Original Gator). Generations of families grew up with Buddy and kept coming back to see the Big Guy! Over the last few months, Buddy began to slow down and show his age.

We had our vet Dr. James Bogan checking in on him regularly. He was on and off medication, getting extra vitamins, and we did everything we could to keep him comfortable.

Those cold snaps this year certainly didn’t make things any easier on him. Our team here at Gatorland would find him early every morning to make sure he was ok. But in the end, even legends have to take that walk over the rainbow bridge. Buddy was comfortable, peaceful, and surrounded by love right up until his very last moments.”

One-Eyed Kyle

A newcomer named One-Eyed Kyle may be his sizable successor, but the Gatorland team hasn't been able to measure him yet.
