HBO Is Premiering the Final Season of One of Its Biggest Shows Tonight

The dynamic, Emmy-dominating duo of Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels are back for one last adventure.

Hacks, the HBO series following the pair's unlikely friendship as they attempt to survive the often-cruel comedy circuit, will air the first episode of its fifth and final season on Thursday, April 9.

In the aftermath of mistaken and unflattering news reports that she passed away, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) return to Las Vegas, Season 5's official logline states. Season 5 sees the pair "more determined than ever to secure Deborah’s legacy as a comedian."

The 10-episode season will debut one episode per week on HBO Max, with two new episodes on April 30 and May 7, leading up to the series finale on Thursday, May 28, according to the network's official press release.

For her role as the fledgling Las Vegas stand-up, Jean Smart has won four consecutive Emmys for her unforgettable lead performance. Hannah Einbinder, who similarly has been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for all four previous seasons, finally took home the well-deserved award at last year's ceremony.

In the upcoming season, the duo will be joined by Paul W. Downs (Broad City), Megan Stalter (Too Much), Carl Clemons-Hopkins (Candyman), Mark Indelicato (Ugly Betty), and Rose Abdoo (Gilmore Girls). Season 5 will also see guest stars including Robby Hoffman (Dying for Sex), Tony Goldwyn (Scandal), Kaitlin Olson (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore), and series newcomer Christopher Briney (The Summer I Turned Pretty).

Although Hacks continues to be a hit with viewers and critics, ending the series on a high was essential for series co-creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky. "We are incredibly honored to be ending Hacks this season exactly as we pitched it seven years ago," the trio said in a joint statement posted by Paul last month.

"We can't thank HBO Max & Universal enough for letting us tell this story just as we hoped to tell it. We know that's a rare thing, and we are beyond grateful. And it wouldn't have been possible without our incredible cast, crew, and writers - we are indebted to them for taking what was a dream of ours and making it come true," they added.

"Though it's hard to say goodbye, in true Deborah Vance style, we didn't wanna run the light. And most of all, thank you to everyone who's watched the show and recommended it to a friend. This season is for you. We hope you love watching the final chapter as much as we loved making it."
