2 Golf Legends Withdrew From the Masters Days Before Tournament

The first major tournament of the year is ready to welcome the best players in the world as Augusta National Golf Club hosts the 90th playing of the Masters.

Two of the greatest golfers to walk the planet abruptly withdrew from the Masters just days before the tournament was set to tee off.

Between them Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have eight green jackets, but neither will be on the course when the first round tees off on Thursday morning.

Tiger Woods Steps Away From Golf

Just last week, Woods announced he would be taking a step away as he sought treatment following a rollover car accident late last month.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” the 15-time major champion said in a statement posted to his social media accounts Tuesday night. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.

“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”

Phil Mickelson Follows Suit, Withdraws From the Masters

Just two days after Woods' announcement, Phil Mickelson announced he, too, won’t be competing in the Masters.

“Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health mater,” Mickelson said in a post on social media.

“I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year. I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching.”

Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley said that Mickelson would be missed.

“We know how much Phil loves the Masters Tournament, and he will be missed by everyone in Augusta next week. He has our complete support to be with his family," Ridley said in a statement.

The Masters begins with Haotong Li and John Keefer going off the first tee at 7:40 a.m. ET on Thursday morning.
