Beloved Horror Movie Joins Netflix 4 Years After Box Office Success

2022's Scream reboot will finally arrive on Netflix on April 10, joining the first three entries in the franchise.

Scream (often called Scream 5 to differentiate from the original movie) arrived eleven years after the previous sequel in this beloved horror franchise, which had unfortunately stalled following the passing of franchise creator Wes Craven.

Craven died in 2015, effectively pausing any plans to continue this popular franchise in the future. After a brief hiatus, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett were hired to reboot the series for a new generation.

Scream 5 is the best of both worlds; the film introduces a whole host of new, young characters whose paths cross with the original Scream characters in a passing-of-the-torch story that sets up a whole new era of Scream.

The film stars Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Dylan Minette, Mikey Madison, Jack Quaid, and Mason Gooding in the new roles, with Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette reprising their roles from the original series.

Scream 5 was a huge box office success, reportedly pulling in $137 million worldwide against a production budget of just $24 million (via Box Office Mojo). Its domestic opening of $30 million was a huge sign that audiences still wanted to see this horror franchise, and the new era of Scream was officially greenlit.

Scream 6 arrived just one year later, with Betinelli-Olpin and Gillett returning to direct and continuing the story in a very clear, direct way. Where previous Scream sequels had felt somewhat disconnected and familiar, there was a sense of purpose to the new movies that made audiences keep coming back for more.

Scream 7 arrived in 2026, and it's already proven to be one of this year's biggest commercial successes. The film has grossed $204 million so far against a $45 million production budget, marking a similar margin of success to Scream 5.

For those who can't wait until next week to finally watch Scream 5 at home, the film is currently available to stream on Paramount+ with a premium subscription. Alternatively, you can rent or buy the film on any major VOD platform, such as Apple TV or Amazon Prime Video.
