The Biggest Pressure Washing Mistake That Destroys Fences

0 2

Pressure washing is the most efficient way to clean a fence, but that’s only if you do it right. Many people often end up damaging their fence by using a pressure washer the wrong way. Since most fences are made of either soft wood or vinyl, damaging them with a pressure washer is surprisingly easy.

Why Fences Are Vulnerable to Damage

Most fences are made from soft pine wood, which is easily torn up by a pressure washer. If a fence is older, then the wood is likely softer, making it even more vulnerable to damage. Vinyl fences are made from hollow plastic that’s susceptible to cracks or even punctures from high pressure water. As vinyl fences get older, they start to become more brittle, making them easier to damage.

Most Common Mistakes

Using Too Much Pressure

This is the most common mistake when pressure washing a fence. Using a zero degree or even a 15 degree nozzle produces too much water pressure, which can shred the top layer of wood, giving it a furry appearance. Keep the pressure low, less than 1,500 PSI, and use a 25 degree or 40 degree tip.

Holding the Nozzle Too Close

Holding the wand too close to the wood focuses the stream on a smaller area, increasing the pressure, which can damage wood or crack vinyl. When pressure washing, slowly bring the wand close to the surface of the fence and never get closer than 12 inches. Resist the urge to move in closer to the surface to remove stubborn stains. Stop and use a scrub brush to loosen up that hard to remove grime instead.

Using Improper Technique

Avoid stopping and starting in the middle of a fence panel or board or hovering over one area. Doing so can cause streaks, inconsistent cleaning or leave marks. Instead, move the wand over the fence using long strokes. This will clean the fence evenly while minimizing the chances of damaging it. Always power wash from the top down to ensure you rinse all of the grime off the fence.

Not Using Cleaning Solutions

Using water alone to clean a fence is a bad idea. Cleaners help to break down dirt and grime, allowing you to remove it without having to use as much water pressure to do so. Apply a detergent designed for cleaning fences, so you’re not tempted to blast the fence with high pressure water to clean it.

Using Bleach to Clean

Using a bleach solution to clean your fence is a bad idea. Bleach damages wood fibers, making it easier for the pressure washer to damage the fence. Bleach run-off is also bad for the environment and can kill grass and nearby plants.

When To Avoid Pressure Washing

While pressure washing can be an efficient way to clean a fence, in certain cases it’s a bad idea. If you’re cleaning a very old fence, avoid using a pressure washer as even a smaller amount of water pressure can damage it. Don’t use a pressure washer to clean a painted fence as it can easily strip off the paint.
