Vintage 'Dr. Pepper' Ad Goes Viral for One Detail That’s Grossing People Out

A vintage Dr. Pepper commercial has been going viral on social media because people can't believe what it is promoting. The decades-old ad featuring a legendary celebrity suggests a way of drinking soda that many viewers find shocking. Many of the disgusted reactions online have been intense and hilarious.

A 1960s Dick Clark Commercial Tried to Make Hot Dr. Pepper a Thing

Unfortunately, many products have a strong seasonal appeal. For example, sunscreen and bug spray sell in the summer, while people buy marshmallows, eggnog, and hot chocolate mix do better in winter. Any company that sells a seasonal product will naturally hope to boost sales during its slower months.

Apparently, Dr. Pepper was looking for a way to boost its winter sales. In the 1960s, the company released a commercial starring Dick Clark that promoted the idea of drinking hot Dr. Pepper when it's cold outside. As online uploads of that ad reveal, Clark gave very specific instructions on how hot Dr. Pepper should be prepared in the commercial.

Here’s exactly what Dick Clark said in part of the ad: “When the weather's cold, that's when Dr. Pepper tastes great hot. Good friends, a roaring fire. The perfect time for hot Dr. Pepper. Delicious and so easy to prepare. Just heat Dr. Pepper in a saucepan until it steams, then pour over a thin slice of lemon. That's a hot idea. Yes, Dr. Pepper is delicious cold or hot. Try hot Dr. Pepper. It's a great winter treat."

Plenty of curious people have tried that recipe and shared their thoughts over the years. For example, a Tasting History article was written by someone who was underwhelmed by drinking Dr. Pepper hot. "This is basically just hot, flat Dr. Pepper. Some people swear that adding the lemon is key, but it didn’t do much for me. I like Dr. Pepper, so I didn’t dislike it, but I wouldn’t choose this over other wintry beverages."

Modern Viewers Are Grossed Out by the Hot Dr. Pepper Suggestion

In January 2026, the hot Dr. Pepper ad was published on Instagram and went viral. At the time of this writing, the post has racked up more than 114,300 likes and 2,900 comments. While some of the people who responded to the post complimented the drink, many people made it obvious they found the idea of hot Dr. Pepper revolting.

The negative comments ranged from things like "hot Dr. Pepper sounds more like a cure for constipation" to "hot and flat… like it’s been sitting opened in my car during the summer." Others kept it short and sweet with reactions like "gross," "ewww hot soda," and "I’m not going to do that."

Some people chose to react to the ad by offering amusing responses, including one user who asked: "What if that was Dick Clark's aging secret?" Another comment pointed out something funny about how the hot Dr. Pepper campaign ended. "At some point they had a marketing meeting where they decided to stop recommending hot Dr Pepper to the public."
