Elle Fanning Joined OnlyFans, But Not for the Reason You Think

Elle Fanning has an OnlyFans account. Before you jump to conclusions, there's a very good explanation.

The 27-year-old actress revealed at SXSW earlier this month that she created the account as part of her research for her upcoming Apple TV series Margo's Got Money Troubles, premiering April 15. In the show, she plays Margo Millet, a college dropout and new mom who turns to OnlyFans to dig herself out of financial ruin after an affair with her English professor leaves her pregnant and alone.

Fanning wasn't about to show up unprepared.

Showrunner Eva Anderson Said They Were 'Very Responsible' With The OnlyFans Account

"Obviously, I am an Instagram user and a TikTok user. I got to look at that," she told People. "Also, we had to dive into OnlyFans a little bit. We did create an account for the writer's room, and for me, so I could check out how the website is."

For the record, she didn't post any content. The account was purely for research, shared with the show's writing team as a collective deep dive into the platform's world. "There was a lot of looking at OnlyFans with the writers, but we all gave consent to each other before we did it," showrunner Eva Anderson said at a SXSW panel. "We were very responsible, and we just tried to get as much information as we could before we started."

The show itself is based on Rufi Thorpe's bestselling 2024 novel and boasts one of the more remarkable casts assembled for a streaming series in recent memory: Michelle Pfeiffer as Margo's mother, Nick Offerman as her father, Nicole Kidman as a mediator between Margo and her professor, and Marcia Gay Harden and Greg Kinnear rounding out the ensemble. Pfeiffer's husband David E. Kelley created the series.

Fanning, who received her first Oscar nomination this year for her work in the Norwegian film Sentimental Value, called Margo "a hopeful character" despite the difficult circumstances she faces. "She's dealt these hardships in life, but somehow she always is able to overcome them," she said. "I think she was really inspiring to play."

Margo's Got Money Troubles premieres April 15 on Apple TV.
