Why Jason Momoa Had to Evacuate His Hawaii Home
Aquaman star Jason Momoa was among the many who had to evacuate their homes in Oahu’s North Shore after devastating flooding in the area.
Power outages and extreme flooding due to heavy rains—the worst in more than two decades—prompted the evacuations of 5,500 people over the weekend, including Momoa and his family.
He shared in an Instagram Story on Saturday that his family left their home after losing their power, but were “safe for now.” The 46-year-old actor is dad to daughter Lola, 18, and son Nakoa-Wolf, 17, both of whom he shares with ex Lisa Bonet. He’s currently dating Andor star Adria Arjona, who has appeared in some of his recent posts in Hawaii.
He added, “but there’s a lot of people who weren’t, so sending all of our love. The conditions on the North Shore are gnarly. So hopefully everyone's safe and getting out. Stay safe out there.”
He also reportedly shared footage of flood damage near his father’s home, calling it “crazy.”
Momoa and Arjona Help Out
Before their evacuation, Momoa shared a video to Instagram showing how he and Arjona were helping others in the area amid weeks of storms.
“Aloha everyone, These past weeks have been heavy. The storms, the flooding, the constant rain across Oʻahu have affected so many of our people especially those already facing hardship. Seeing families displaced, communities struggling, and our unhoused neighbors hit the hardest,” he captioned a video, in which he explained Arjona wanted to help feed the unhoused.
They teamed up with a local restaurant chain, Zippy's, to hand out food to those in need.
“What may feel like a small gesture can mean everything to someone in need,” wrote Momoa. “We spent time on the west side, just trying to show love, bring some food, and remind our community that we see you, we stand with you, and you’re not alone. That’s what aloha is. It’s showing up for each other when it matters most.”
Others Praise Momoa and Arjona's Assistance
Stunt performer Ian Streetz, who is also a collaborator of Momoa’s, took to Instagram early Monday morning to praise his and Arjona’s assistance in the area.
Showing off some of the damage, as well as photos of Momoa handing out food and water to those in need, Streetz gave the actor a shoutout for springing into action.
“I swear the only thing bigger than the big man is his heart ❤️ For a guy who literally doesn’t have a spare second in the day, the legend @prideofgypsies is NEVER too busy to help,” he captioned the post.
Noting how he and Arjona were already helping before the flooding intensified, Streetz said that “as soon as the disaster happened the big man was right back asking what was needed and handing out food, water, dog food, hygienic supplies, whatever was needed.”
“Thank you brother for letting me be a part of something so beautiful and sending all the love in the world to the people of Hawaii,” he added, before Momoa jumped into the comments and added, “Love you brother. My ride or die You have had my back ❤️❤️mahalo for helping me and the Ohana.”
Island Faces Severe Damage
Per Governor Josh Green, while the “immediate threat from the storm has passed, recovery efforts continue across the islands as state and county crews assess damage, clear debris and restore impacted infrastructure.”
More than 200 rescues were reported; thankfully, there have been no reports of deaths or anyone unaccounted for. The flooding caused an expected $1 billion in damages, as power has started to be restored to the area.
