What is HumanMetapneumovirus?
This little-known respiratory virus shows up during cold and flu season, sometimes mistaken for the flu or RSV and has similar symptoms. It was first discovered in 2001, according to UC Davis.
“Infection transmits by coughing and sneezing, close personal contact (touching or shaking hands), or touching contaminated objects or surfaces, then touching the mouth, nose or eyes,” according to a news release.
It tends to peak later than flu, around April.
Where Is Human Metapneumovirus Circulating?
The West Coast, particularly California, is currently experiencing an uptick in the virus.
Who Is At Risk?
It can be severe for babies, people with weakened immune systems, people who are on long-term steroids, having breathing problems, have cancer, and the elderly.
