Winter Storm Warning Issued as Up to 10 Inches of Snow Approach: 'Dangerous' Driving Conditions

A winter storm is bearing down on northern New England just one day after the first day of spring, and forecasters are warning that travel across the region could become dangerous by Sunday morning.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 2 a.m. Sunday through 2 a.m. Monday for parts of western Maine and northern New Hampshire, including Fryeburg, Bethel, Rangeley, Farmington, Conway, and Wolfeboro. Heavy snow is expected, with total accumulations between six and ten inches across the warning area.

Western Maine and Northern New Hampshire: Up to 10 Inches, Dangerous Road Conditions

The storm is expected to begin early Sunday morning and continue through the day before tapering off overnight into Monday. Snowfall rates will be heaviest between 1 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sunday, with plowable snow expected throughout the storm.

"Travel might be impacted," forecasters warned, "Periods of moderate and heavy snow will combine with low visibility to create dangerous driving conditions."

Snow-covered and slippery roads are expected across the warning area, and motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm.

A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect from 5 a.m. Sunday through 5 a.m. Monday for much of southern and central Maine, including Portland, Augusta, Lewiston, Brunswick, and Belfast, where three to six inches of snow are expected. While accumulations will be lighter, travel could still be impacted across the advisory area.

Temperatures are expected to drop significantly behind the storm, with much colder air sweeping southward across the Northeast from Sunday into Monday.
