'Buffy' Star Nicholas Brendon Dies: Cause of Death & Health Struggles Explained

Actor Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris on the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer from 1997 to 2003, has died. He was 54.

Brendon died on Friday, March 20, according to a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporterfrom his family. In the statement, the nature of the actor's death was also confirmed to the entertainment outlet.

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans," the statement from Nicholas's family began.

"He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was. While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”

Nicholas Brendon's Cause of Death and Health Issues: What We Know So Far

In recent decades, Brendon's health struggles have been subject to much public and press attention. The actor admitted to substance abuse struggles in his 30s, leading to an infamous appearance on the daytime magazine talk show Dr. Phil in 2015, in which he discussed his addiction and legal struggles, involving him walking out of the interview with the controversial TV host.

Brendon's legal issues started in 2010 with an arrest and tasering by Los Angeles police, resulting in the Buffy star being charged with four misdemeanors, including one count of resisting arrest, two counts of battery against a police officer, and one count of vandalism. Between 2014 and 2021, Nicholas was arrested for assault of two separate girlfriends, as well as felony third-degree robbery, criminal mischief, grand theft, drug possession, malicious injury to property, and resisting or obstructing officers.

His addiction struggles also played a role in his ongoing health battles, including cauda equina syndrome, which required several corrective spinal surgeries following a fall, as well as paralysis and a congenital heart defect. In 2023, Brendon revealed he had previously suffered a heart attack the previous year.

The Hollywood Reporter also stated in their announcement following his death that the actor was "said to have been optimistic about his recent outlook and attitude," and "had been hopeful that he’d finally turned a corner," implying his death had been unexpected.
