Alabama Student James Gracey's Final Moments Caught on Barcelona Video: Report
More details have emerged in the death of University of Alabama student James "Jimmy" Gracey, who was reported missing while on Spring Break in Barcelona, Spain earlier this week.
The 20-year-old went missing early Tuesday morning, after leaving Shoko nightclub with friends. On Thursday, his body was recovered in shallow water in front of the club where he was last seen.
Now, local Spanish paper El Paíshas new details about Gracey's last moments, which were allegedly caught on video.
Gracey's Final Moments
Per El Pais, citing police sources, newly discovered surveillance video from the area reportedly shows Gracey walking alone toward a dock, before falling into the water, with nobody to help him.
Dive teams found his body nearby, with police reportedly concluding he accidentally fell into the water. The autopsy allegedly confirmed he died by drowning, though authorities haven't publicly commented on the cause of death.
“Everything points to an accidental death, although we are not disclosing details regarding how the events unfolded,” a spokesperson for the local police, Mossos d'Esquadra, told Fox News Digital.
They added, “We will not comment on other reports that may have appeared in the media.”
A spokesperson previously told CNN that the evidence suggested his death was “not a criminal act.” Fox News also reported earlier this week that authorities arrested a man with Gracey’s phone, though no additional details were released. His wallet, meanwhile, was recovered floating in the sea before the discovery of his body.
Gracey's Family Reacts to His Death
The 20-year-old student was the eldest of five children, with his father reportedly traveling to Barcelona to help with the search for his son.
On Thursday, the family said they were “heartbroken” to confirm his body had been recovered.
“Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss,” they said in a statement. “We are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers from people around the world — so many helped to share Jimmy’s story and bring his life to light so that others may know him.”
One of his younger siblings, brother Tommy, took to Instagram to post an emotional tribute to James as well.
“To my Beautiful Big Brother, Jimmy. I don’t know what to say or how to deal with this. I can’t believe it. I’m gonna miss all the texts and calls about hockey, school, and life in general. I’m not ready to say goodbye to that,” he began.
“I don’t know how to get through this or how to take over your [role] in the family. Your courage for all of us was inspiring,” Tommy continued. “I can’t say goodbye yet. I would do anything to have just one more conversation with you.”
The heartbreaking post concluded: “Thank you for everything. I just can’t believe that’s all over. I will do my best to pass on your legacy. What a ride dude. I can’t wait to see you again in eternal paradise. I love you and fly high, Jimmy. ❤️????️”
