Just one day after it was reported that Chuck Norris was in "good spirits" following his hospitalization in Hawaii, the family announced that the beloved action star had died on Thursday morning. He was 86 years old.
Norris' verified Instagram account shared the devastating news.
The Norris Family Delivers the Sad News
"It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning. While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace," the lengthy caption read in a post that included a black and white photo of Norris. "To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family."
The post went on to say, "He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives."
The family went on to say they'll remember him "for the unforgettable moments" they were blessed to share with him.
Chuck Norris Celebrated His 86th Birthday Last Week
It was just last week when Carlos Ray "Chuck" Norris, who was born in Oklahoma to Irish American and Cherokee Native American parents, celebrated his 86th birthday by posting a video of himself sparring with the best of them.
The Walker, Texas Ranger star proudly said he doesn't age, he levels up. Anyone who has followed his career knows that Norris has been active his entire life, even now in his 80s, which is why it came as a huge surprise for fans to learn he’s been hospitalized.
TMZ reported on Thursday that Norris was hospitalized in Hawaii after suffering a “medical emergency.” It’s unclear at the moment the specifics about the medical emergency, but the outlet reports he’s in “good spirits.”
The outlet went on to report that the medical emergency occurred in the last 24 hours on the island of Kauai. It appears he was training on the island, though it’s not immediately known if the training triggered the medical emergency.
The cause of death is not known.
Chuck Norris, The Martial Arts Specialist
Back in his day, Norris, whose family moved from Kansas to Torrance, California, after his parents divorced, trained and got in the ring with the best of them. He trained with the legendary Bruce Lee, and they appeared together in the 1972 film The Way of the Dragon. Norris trained in the sport while stationed in Korea with the U.S. Air Force in the late 1950s.
Norris, an expert martial artist who holds multiple black belts, appeared in more than a dozen action films, including The Delta Force, Hellbound, and he even had a cameo as himself in Dodgeball. He got into acting thanks to, of all people, Steve McQueen, whom Norris counted as one of his karate students.
I'll always remember Chuck Norris as the man who changed the course of dodgeball history by casting the deciding vote that allowed Average Joes to play in the championship of the Las Vegas International Dodgeball Open where they upset the heavily favored Globo Gym Purple Cobras.… pic.twitter.com/X2urhv236o

"I retired as the world karate champion, and I was looking for something to get involved in, a new goal for myself. And I thought about acting," Norris told CNN in 1982. "I talked to Steve McQueen about it, and he encouraged me to pursue it. He said, if I would apply myself like I did the martial arts, that I would maybe have a chance at it."
He’s perhaps best known for starring in the CBS hit series, Walker, Texas Ranger, which aired for nine seasons on CBS from 1993 to 2001. The series also starred Clarence Gilyard, a former football player who becomes a Texas Ranger and Norris’s trusted sidekick.
The show was so popular that it was broadcast in over 100 countries. Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire was released in 2005 as a TV movie.
Chuck Norris Had a Great Sense of Humor
Yes, he was a meme king in his day. He was also a big-time jokester.

Chuck Norris Loved His Cigars
The ultimate tough guy once owned a cigar brand dubbed Lone Wolf.
He appeared on the cover of Cigar Aficionado nearly 30 years ago. In that 1998 piece, Norris pushed back on any flak about his affinity for smoking one Lone Wolf cigar a day.
"Listen, you've got to be 21 to be smoking a cigar in the first place," Norris said in the piece. "And smoking a cigar is an experience, not like smoking a pack of cigarettes every day. A cigar is for relaxation. I do enjoy cigar smoking and I'm old enough to smoke."
He added, "Anything done in excess is going to be bad for you, whether it's eating, drinking or whatever. The key to enjoying cigar smoking is moderation."
In that same cover story, Norris shared the impact karate had on his personal and emotional life.
"By the time I left Korea, I had my black belt in tae kwan do and my brown belt in judo, and an interesting transformation was taking place. When I was growing up, I was a real shy kid. I guess not having a father image, a man to give you that strength of character, contributed to that. Martial arts really changed all that," he said. "That's why I'm such an advocate of the martial arts -- because it does help you change your life in a positive direction. It helps you to be able to communicate, to be more self-assured, and it raises your self-esteem, which is the most important thing. It instills discipline and respect, which is lacking in many young kids. Discipline was the most important lesson I learned very early on in my martial arts career."
