0 26

Chuck Norris has suddenly died at 86, but one part of his legacy will continue to endure: the larger-than-life jokes that made him into an internet icon. Here is the story of how the "Chuck Norris Facts" jokes began and why they are going strong today.

Chuck Norris Jokes Spread On Social Media After His Death

Within minutes of the news of Chuck Norris' passing breaking online, fans began flooding social media with jokes. While that would be odd for most celebrities, humor about the movie star's greatness has long been as central a part of his legacy as his action movies.

One X user responded to the news of Norris' death by joking that the actor decided to take the Grim Reaper's job. "RIP legend ????… Chuck Norris didn't die, he just kicked death out and took his job ❤️" Another suggested that he retired from life after doing it all. "Chuck Norris didn't die, he won at life and retired from it. RIP ????"

One fan posted an image of Norris in a fighting stance alongside a joke about him having one last great adventure left. "Chuck Norris is off on his last, great adventure: to punch God. Rest easy, legend."

Even another icon got in on the fun. Stephen King posted his two favorite Chuck Norris jokes on X. His first post read, "My fave Chuck Norris joke: Chuck doesn't flush the toilet, he scares the s--t out of it." He followed that up with, "Second fave: When he was born, Chuck Norris drove his mother home from the hospital.

Long before their recent social media resurgence, Chuck Norris jokes had long been a major part of internet history. In fact, an August 2023 ESPN article argued that "Chuck Norris Facts" gave birth to the modern meme as it revealed the history of the trend that paved the way for a lot of today's internet humor.

ESPN described the moment in 2005 when a then-high school senior created the Norris trend. After stumbling across jokes about Vin Diesel, he switched the focus to Chuck Norris after running a forum poll. Then, much to his surprise, the website he built for his Chuck Norris Facts generator started getting 20 million views a month, and the rest is history.

Fortunately, Norris embraced the meme. For example, he read a top 10 Chuck Norris Facts list on The Best Damn Sports Show Period in 2006. The actor laughed along and seemed delighted. He even suggested that the creators of the jokes should write screenplays.
