Oscars Audience Reacts to Timothée Chalamet Ballet Joke

0 1

It's the biggest Oscars controversy of the year, so perhaps it was an inevitability that Timothée Chalamet's comments about ballet and opera would shape the sense of humor at this year's Academy Awards monologues.

Chalamet, in a discussion with former Insterstellar co-star Matthew McConaughey for Variety, got into the declining popularity of the arts with audiences. The 30-year-old, who is one of the favorites to win the Best Actor Oscar this year for his role as Marty Mauser in the sports-crime epic Marty Supreme, has previously expressed fears about the potential death of movies and the movie star persona.

In the conversation, Chalamet expressed fears about cinema becoming a more niche spectacle reserved only for the elites, like opera and ballet. “I admire people, and I’ve done it myself, who go on a talk show and say, ‘Hey, we’ve got to keep movie theaters alive, we’ve gotta keep this genre alive,’" Timothée told the fellow actor. "and another part of me feels like if people want to see it, like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, they’re going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it.”

In a following statement that went viral, Chalamet said, , “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey! Keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore,'” he says with a laugh. “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there … I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I’m taking shots for no reason.”

Many social media users supported the actor, taking his comments in good faith as a statement about keeping the arts alive before they lose their cultural stronghold. Others, such as fellow actors Jamie Lee Curtis and Nathan Lane, criticized the actor for his tone and curtness.

How the Oscars Poked Fun at Timothée Chalamet's Ballet and Opera Remarks — And How Viewers at Home Reacted

During the opener for this year's ceremony, host Conan O'Brien came out swinging at the start of his opening monologue with a joke about the controversy.

Making a joke about the difficult year for Hollywood, O'Brien warned there may be some attacks during the ceremony from rogue opera singers and ballet dancers.

"Security is extremely tight tonight," Conan said. "I'm told there's concern about attacks from both the opera and ballet community."

The camera quickly panned to Timothée laughing at the joke, alongside the audience before bursting into applause. After seeing Chalamet's reaction, the comic then quipped, "they're just mad you left out jazz!"
