One of 2026’s Most Oscar-Nominated Movies Lands on Netflix Next Month
One of the most-nominated films at this weekend's 98th Academy Awards will soon be walking off the red carpet and making its way to Netflix, free to stream for all subscribers.
Bugonia is an English-language black comedy/science-fiction film based on the cult Korean movie, Save The Green Planet!, released in 2003. The remake, released in 2025, is directed by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, known for The Favourite (2018), Poor Things (2023), and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2018).
The western version of the film was initially planned to be directed by the original's director, Korean filmmaker Jang Joon-hwan. However, ill health meant that Lanthimos stepped into the role. Joon-hwan gets a writing credit for the film, but the screenplay for the English-language take goes to Will Tracy, former editor-in-chief of parody news outlet The Onion, as well as a writer for the HBO series Succession, as well as cult black comedy The Menu.
Cast members include Lanthimos's long-time collaborator Emma Stone (La La Land, Poor Things) in the lead role, alongside Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad, The Power of the Dog), Alicia Silverstone (Clueless, The Crush), and newcomer Aidan Delbis. Podcaster and comedian Stavros Halkias also plays a supporting role in the film.
The official synopsis of the film (per IMDb) states that "Two conspiracy-obsessed young men [Plemons and Delbis] kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company [Stone], convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth."
Bugonia premiered at the Venice Film Festival last summer, and premiered in theaters across the U.S. in October. The film was nominated for four Oscars at this year's Academy Awards, with double Oscar winner Emma Stone being nominated for Best Actress yet again. The film was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Score (Jerskin Fendrix), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Tracy).
Bugonia lands on Netflix on April 26.
