James Taylor is a beloved American singer-songwriter who was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on March 12, 1948, which means he is turning 78 today. Known for his ability to pack incredible stories in concise lyrics, he is also celebrated for his warm and comforting voice. In fact, Rolling Stone ranked him as No. 74 on its 2010 list of the greatest singers of all time.

Thanks to the fact that his music connects with listeners, Taylor's biggest hit, "You've Got A Friend," reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. As his Billboard chart history shows, that may have been the only time one of his songs reached the top, but Taylor released 21 songs that charted during the 1970s and 1980s.

While his music career is undeniably remarkable, some people may know him best for a hilarious TV cameo he once made. During The Simpsons, Season 5, Episode 15, "Deep Space Homer," Taylor voiced a fictional version of himself who appeared as part of one of the show's most memorable episodes. As Homer Simpson floats in space with chips and ants floating around him, NASA arranges to have Taylor sing for the astronauts, unaware of the chaos unfolding. When Buzz Aldrin interrupts to say it's not a good time, the normally laid-back singer angrily insists they listen, creating a funny moment that went against his well-defined image.
