33 Years Ago Today, This Legendary Rock Band Started Making History
On March 11, 1993, British rock band Oasis started recording their first album Definitely Maybe, which went on to become one of the most successful debut albums ever released.
The band recorded their first demos at The Real People's studio in Liverpool, where they met with Creation Records and got signed for the first time. The demos would later become Definitely Maybe, the album that catapulted them to stardom.
'Definitely Maybe' Came During The Height of Britpop Music
Today, Oasis is one of the first bands that comes to mind when considering the 'Britpop' movement that broke out in the U.K. in the early '90s—but in reality, the Manchester band was actually fairly late to the game. Rival rock band Blur had already released three studio albums by the time Definitely Maybe came around, and competitors Pulp had been around for over a decade already.
Definitely Maybe was clearly inspired by all these groups that would later become Oasis' creative contemporaries and media rivals, but it arrived at the perfect time to capitalize on the rising popularity of Britpop. Oasis were credited with pushing the subgenre to a whole new popularity, with most agreeing that Britpop officially peaked two years later with Oasis' (What's The Story) Morning Glory?
Definitely Maybe quickly broke records to become the fastest-selling debut album ever released (via All Music), and has since been certified 10x Platinum by the BPI for selling over 3 million copies.
The demos recorded at The Real People's studio in Liverpool were officially released in 2014 as a limited edition cassette titled Live Demonstration to coincide with the album's 20th anniversary. The demos still have no official streaming release.
Definitely Maybe was labelled the "greatest album" ever recorded in NME's 2006 reader's poll, while Rolling Stone placed the record at No. 217 on their ranking of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
