Beloved Action Sequel Joins Netflix One Year After Box Office Disappointment

0 4

One year after an underwhelming run at the box office, Bob Odenkirk's bloody action sequel Nobody 2 is finally making its debut on Netflix.

The film—directed by Timo Tjahjanto and writtten by Derek Kolstad & Aaron Rabin—takes place several years after the original movie and follows Odenkirk's protagonist as he attempts to pay off his debts to a dangerous crime lord.

Nobody 2 will arrive on Netflix U.S. on March 14.

'Nobody 2' Is A Worthwhile Action Sequel

Despite a modest box office performance, Nobody 2 received strong reviews at the time of release. The film pulled in just over $21.6 million domestically against a worldwide gross of $43 million, which didn't quite break even against its reported $25 million budget (via Box Office Mojo).

But still, Nobody 2 is a strong action sequel that replicates the high-energy thrills of the original movie while doubling down on worldbuilding and character development, as every good sequel should do. The film currently sits at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an impressive Audience Score of 88%.

The sequel explores how Odenkirk's protagonist Hank has struggled to keep his family together after accruing an enormous debt from the mysterious Butcher. After planning a vacation to revive his marriage and relationship with his kids, Hank accidentally drags them into a deadly conspiracy of killers and thieves.

The summary of critics' reviews on Rotten Tomatoes calls Nobody 2 "...a diverting sequel that measures up admirably to the original." Screen Rant labels the film as "relentlessly entertaining", while IGN notes that "the extreme violence gets pushed into more farcical and viscerally cartoonish places."

Both in filmmaking style and storytelling structure, the Nobody franchsie has been consistently compared to John Wick. There's an ex-assassin coming out of retirement, an older protagonist with serious martial arts skills, and very tight choreography that relies on dynamic camera movements and long, extended set pieces to keep the audience on edge.

The comparisons are clearly valid, but Nobody 2 also does a great job of pushing the franchise away from its John Wick-inspired roots and into something more lighthearted and adventure-driven. The detour to a run-down holiday resort gives this sequel a very different atmosphere from the first movie, but it's a very welcome change.

Nobody 2 will be streaming on Netflix across the world from March 14. Watch the trailer below.
