59 Years Ago Today, A Popular Rock Band Reached an Important Milestone
On March 9, 1967, a beloved English rock band made waves and played one of the most important music venues of its era.
This band transformed popular music with its psychedelic songs and reimagined how audiences and concertgoers listen to music.
On that day, Pink Floyd and The Thoughts appeared at The Marquee Club London, England, according to research from PinkFloydz.com. It was a groundbreaking appearance right as the rock band was hitting its stride. The show also marked their second time at the venue, the first being March 13, 1966.
Pink Floyd Plays Legendary Rock Venue 59 Years Ago
The Marquee club has been called the "most important venue in the history of pop music," according to This Day In Music, "not only for having been the scene of the development of modern music culture in London, but also for having been an essential meeting point for some of the most important artists in rock music."
"What’s the link between the corner of Oxford Street and Poland Street; the Soho Lofts apartments on Wardour Street; and the Montagu Pyke Wetherspoon’s pub on Charing Cross Road?" the Londonist publication asks in a 2023 feature.
They answer that "they all occupy sites that were formerly the address of the Marquee, arguably the most influential small music venue there’s ever been – in London, or anywhere else."
Punk 77 says of the venue, "Opening in 1958, it was a modern jazz club where two jazz bands would play a night. In the gap between bands, young hopefuls would play and the whole the rest of the audience would often adjourn across the road for a beer."
Over time, the bands that played the venue became more rock 'n' roll than punk, and that's where Pink Floyd comes in.
Over the Decades, the Four Tops Have Been Honored By the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Grammys
As for Pink Floyd's origin, the group got together in the early 1960s. "A group of talented teenagers from academic backgrounds in Cambridge — Roger 'Syd' Barrett, Roger Waters and David Gilmour — are all keen guitarists and among many who move to London, keen to discover more of this new world and express themselves in it," Pink Floyd's official website states.
The official site adds, "In 1965, Barrett and Waters meet an experimental percussionist and an extraordinarily gifted keyboards-player — Nick Mason and Rick Wright respectively. The result is Pink Floyd, which more than 40 years later has moved from massive to almost mythic standing."
Audio Ink Radio adds that the band's The Dark Side of the Moon album "is a whole mood, a sonic eclipse that swallowed pop culture and never really let go."
So, today is a special one in Pink Floyd history. The band's music lives on today.
