Apple TV Cancels Beloved Emmy-Nominated Show
Apple TV+ has an extensive library of critically acclaimed original shows like Severance, Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Silo, and Slow Horses. Unfortunately, not every beloved show is successful, and it sounds like one Emmy-nominated show has come to an unceremonious end.
Palm Royale was a resounding success during its first season, earning 11 Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series. However, after its second season, which premiered back in November, it sounds like Apple TV has decided to cancel the show.
What is 'Palm Royale'?
Based on the 2018 novel Mr. & Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel, Palm Royale is a comedy-drama set in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1969.
The series follows outsider Maxine Dellacorte-Simmons, who is played by Kristen Wiig, as she looks to earn a place in the high society of Palm Beach, Florida, through the town's most exclusive country club, the Palm Royale.
The show centers around the lengths that Maxine is willing to go to achieve her goal.
In addition to Wiig, the show starred Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Amber Chardae Robinson, Mindy Cohn, Julia Duffy, and Carol Burnett.
Canceled After Season 2
While the show was renewed for a second season following the critically-acclaimed first season, it will not be continuing any further, as Deadline reported on Monday night that the show had been canceled.
While season 2 ended in such a way that the show could have continued, Deadline notes that the season did at least give the show some sort of closure and even provided a tribute to the 92-year-old Burnett in her final episode.
"Regarding the storyline, Palm Royale could’ve continued but the ending gave the show a conclusion. And there was a special tribute to Burnett’s character, Norma Dellacorte, in her planned final episode. As Norma, Burnette sang a warm rendition of 'Something Good' in the Season 2 finale," Rosy Cordero wrote for Deadline.
Apple TV did not issue a statement or comment on the decision. This marks the first show that the streaming service has canceled this year, while Netflix has already canceled a handful of shows in just the first couple of months of the year.
