Metacritic Removes AI-Generated 'Resident Evil Requiem' Review

0 0

Resident Evil Requiem is out tomorrow, and fans will finally be able to experience Capcom's next entry in the now-30-year-old franchise. Reviews were released yesterday, including Men's Journal's review of the game, but Metacritic has removed one site's review due to alleged AI generation.

Originally reported by Kotaku, the Resident Evil Requiem review from the media outlet Videogamer has been removed from Metacritic. Videogamer is a U.K.-based games media company, which recently was sold to an SEO agency called Clickout.

The review, which gave the game a 9/10 and heavily praised it, seemed suspicious to fans, as the review is full of clichés and lacks detail. The profile picture of the author is also seemingly AI-generated, as the URL is associated with ChatGPT. As of this writing, the review is still up on the Videogamer website.

Upon the discovery of the use of AI to write the review, Metacritic removed the review and released a statement, which was captured by Alex Donaldson on Blue Sky.

The statement reads, "Our policy is that we will never include an AI-generated review on Metacritic, and that if we subsequently discover that one has been posted, we will remove it immediately and sever ties with that publication upon an investigation."

Other 2026 video game reviews from Videogamer have also been removed from Metacritic.

According to sources close to Kotaku, Clickout began publishing AI-generated content last fall, but it wasn't until last week, when the staff was let go, that the AI-generated content began to take over in the video game news, reviews, and features.

Resident Evil Requiem debuted on Metacritic as the best-reviewed game of 2026 so far.

Videogamer has not yet released a statement about the allegations.

Resident Evil Requiem releases Friday, February 27, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
