Beloved Action Movie Joins Netflix Three Years After Box Office Disappointment
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning has found a streaming home on Netflix three years after its underwhelming box office performance.
The action sequel made $571 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), which is typically a high figure—but it failed to break even due to the film's immense budget and production setbacks during the pandemic.
'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning' Joined Netflix This Week
The seventh Mission: Impossible movie was added to the streaming platform on February 25, becoming the first instalment in the franchise to find a home there. The rest of the Mission: Impossible series can be streamed at no extra charge for Paramount+ subscribers.
Dead Reckoning follows Tom Cruise's protagonist Ethan Hunt as he races against the clock to stop an artificial intelligence with world-ending capabilities from falling into the hands of the highest bidder.
The film also stars Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Fergusson, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, and Pom Klementieff in supporting roles.
Despite its underwhelming commercial performance—only barely outperforming the franchise's lowest point, Mission: Impossible III—the action sequel was widely praised by critics and general audiences upon its release.
The film currently sits at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a very impressive audience score of 94%. The site's reviews call it "a trimuph" and "an unforgettable cinematic experience", with many critics praising the bold stunts and Tom Cruise's invigorating lead performance.
The sequel was coming hot off the heels of Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which is frequently cited as the franchise's highest point. After a series of very solid sequels with compelling—if sometimes silly—storylines, Fallout brought a much darker and grittier tone to the franchise that critics were immediately enamored with.
Dead Reckoning feels like an effective mixture of the two styles, with its story of immense global magnitude that also manages to feel like a Saturday morning cartoon at times. Watch the review for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning below.
