New Winter Storm Warning for 6 States as 3 Feet of Snow, 70 mph Winds Emerge

0 1

The East and West Coasts of the United States have both experienced major snowstorms over the past week with up to 15 feet falling in the Sierra Mountains of California early last week and a blizzard striking much of the East Coast over the weekend.

More than three feet of snow fell in parts of Rhode Island as New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts all experienced heavy snowfall with accumulations well over 20 inches in many locations.

Now the National Weather Service is calling for the North Central United States to receive heavy snowfall.

National Weather Service Calls for Heavy Snow

The Weather Prediction Center of the National Weather Service revealed a clipper system will swing across the north-central U.S. today, bringing a burst of heavy snow to the Great Lakes region.

"As the system pushes east tonight into Wednesday, heavy snow will come to an end across the Great Lakes and snow showers will spread into the northern Mid-Atlantic and Northeast," the NWS said. "Brisk northwesterly flow on the backside of the system will support lake effect snows downwind of the Great Lakes through Wednesday. In the West, a slow moving frontal system will produce unsettled weather, with heavy snow in the Cascades and northern Rockies, through Wednesday."

Six States Expecting up to 3 Feet of Snow, 70 mph Winds

Colorado: The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Willow Creek Pass, Rocky Mountain National Park, Rabbit Ears Range, Cameron Pass, and Laramie and Medicine Bow Mountains with snow accumulations of seven to 13 inches and locally up to 17 inches in and near the mountains of Rocky Mountain National Park. Winds gusting as high as 65 mph are expected in the region. West Jackson and West Grand Counties above 9,000 feet will see up to 20 inches of snow.

Pennsylvania: Johnstown and Somerset will see up to four inches of snow and 35 mph winds that could make the Tuesday commutes dangerous.

Michigan: Manistique, Grand Marais, Gladstone, Escanaba, Munising, Newberry, and Seney will receive up to eight inches of snow and 40 mph winds that will see visibilities drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow.

Minnesota: Cook County is expected to receive additional snow accumulations between 3 and 6 inches which will create hazardous travel conditions that could impact the Tuesday morning commute.

Montana: The Crazy and Beartooth Mountains are expected to receive periods of heavy snow with total snow accumulations between 1 and 2 feet with winds that could gust as high as 70 mph. "Recreation in the high country will be impacted by heavy accumulating snow. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility over the exposed higher elevations," the National Weather Service warned.

Wyoming: The Absaroka Mountains (part of the Northern Rocky Mountains) are expected to receive total snow accumulations 15 to 25 inches and strong winds up to 60 to 70 mph. Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains will see up to three feet of snow with snowfall rates up to two inches per hour on Tuesday.
