Nancy Guthrie Case: Savannah Guthrie's Sorority Sisters Show Support

0 2

The investigation into Nancy Guthrie's disappearance is now into its 23rd day. As authorities continue to look for her 84-year-old mother, the suspected victim of a kidnapping, Today co-host Savannah Guthrie is holding out hope for a happy ending.

Savannah Guthrie is a University of Arizona alum and member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Amidst her ongoing quest to find her mother, Guthrie is receiving support from fellow Pi Beta Phi sisters.

Members praying and hoping

In an interview with NBC News' Erin McLaughlin, current members of the Pi Beta Phi chapter in Tucson are sending their well-wishes to Guthrie, who visited the sorority house last November.

“Whether you’re young or you’re old, you felt an impact through this case and it’s really important to stay together, especially now, and just continue to support them and show our love, especially because we are her sisters,” sorority member Madison Mueller said.

Over the weekend, a team of independent volunteer searchers uncovered a potential piece of evidence approximately two miles away from the missing 84-year-old's Tucson, Arizona home.

As devastating as her current situation may be, Pi Beta Phi sisters want Savannah Guthrie to know she is on their minds.

“She knows Tucson is her home. But we hope she knows that we are all her home now too,” Pi Beta Phi's Karly Reese said.

Nancy Guthrie update: Backpack not a 'viable lead'

Yesterday, volunteer searchers found a black backpack in a tunnel just off West Orange Grove Road, near State Route 77, about two miles from Nancy Guthrie's Tucson home. The area doubles as a homeless encampment, per the New York Post.

On Monday, investigators announced that after processing the backpack and examining its contacts, it was determined that it is unrelated to the Guthrie case.

In a statement provided to The Arizona Republic, Pima County Sheriff Department spokesperson Kevin Adger provided more information on the backpack.

"The backpack that was located by volunteers yesterday was collected by a deputy and examined at a nearby substation," Adger said.

"After reviewing the bag and its contents, it does not appear that this is a viable lead for the investigation. The bag appears to have been outside for much longer than three weeks. It also contained identification of a minor within it."

It had previously been reported that the backpack found Sunday did not resemble the one worn by the potential suspect in surveillance footage.

Investigators determined the bag in the surveillance video was a black Ozark Trail Hiker backpack, sold exclusively at Walmart.

Sheriffs still hoping for breakthrough elsewhere

While this find by the search party ultimately wound up being insignificant, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in an interview with "NBC Nightly News" over the weekend that authorities were making progress on identifying some of the other items worn by the man caught on the surveillance camera.

“I think we’re getting a little closer to identifying some of the other articles, not just that backpack. Like the shoes, the pants, the shirt or jacket,” Nanos explained.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home on the night of Saturday, Jan. 31. She was reported missing the following day after failing to meet friends as scheduled.

Nanos also told NBC that police are "not quitting" on the search for the suspected kidnapping victim.
