Former NFL Pro Bowler Dies 'Suddenly and Unexpectedly' at 54

Longtime NFL offensive lineman Tre Johnson passed away over the weekend while on a trip with his family. He was 54.

Johnson's wife Irene announced his passing in a message shared to Facebook Sunday, revealing that her husband died earlier in the day.

"It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my husband, Tre' Johnson, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday February 15, 2026, during a brief family trip," Irene wrote. "His four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden, extended family, friends, and I are devastated and in shock.

"If you know Tre' you know what a devoted and loving father, he was to his children. Tre' lived for his kid’s sports activities and supported them through every practice and game until he took his last breath. He shared his passion for Frenchie’s and riding his motorcycle with me and his fellow biking buddies."

Johnson's life remembered

A second-round pick of the Washington Redskins out of Temple in 1994, Johnson spent eight of his nine professional seasons with the franchise (1994-2000, 2002). He also played three games for the Cleveland Browns in 2001.

Primarily an offensive guard, Johnson appeared in 93 career games with 72 starts. He was a Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro selection in 1999.

After retirement, Johnson worked as a history teacher at Landon School in Maryland, where sadly, he was forced to take a recent leave of absence due to health issues, his wife said.

Johnson's former team pays tribute

A native of New York State, Johnson spent almost his entire NFL career with the Redskins (now Commanders).

On Sunday, the Commanders shared a heartfelt message about their former player on social media.

"We're heartbroken to learn of the loss of former Washington All-Pro guard Tre' Johnson. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones," the team's statement reads.
