New Winter Storm Warning as 5 Feet of Snow, 75 mph Winds Approach

The National Weather Service warned of a new storm that will bring heavy rain and massive amounts of snowfall to an area in desperate need of precipitation.

"Meanwhile, upper-level troughing moves onshore over the West Coast from Saturday evening into Monday. Rain and higher-elevation snow will develop over the Pacific Northwest off and on from Saturday through late Sunday night," the NWS said.

"The rain and snow become steadier over the Northwest on Monday afternoon. Furthermore, rain will develop over parts of California overnight Saturday, with higher-elevation snow starting on Sunday morning. Similarly, rain and higher-elevation snow will become steadier on Monday. Heavy snowfall accumulations will develop over the Sierra Nevada Mountains Sunday night into Monday."

Those in the path of the storm are encouraged to winterize outdoor faucets, apply these solutions for insulating windowsprepare for roof snow removal and apply salt to driveways and walkways in a manner that’s safe for children and pets.

Up to 5 Feet of Snow, 75 mph Winds Incoming

Accuweather is predicting a plethora of snowfall throughout parts of Oregon and California.

"Freezing levels will reach well below the passes in Northern California, so that a major snowfall occurs over the higher elevations. Along Interstate 80 through the Sierra Nevada, a general 2-4 feet of snow will fall with the high potential for Donner Pass to close for a time from late Sunday night to Monday night," the report stated.

Meanwhile, "many of the ski resorts in the Sierra Nevada will pick up 3-5 feet of snow from the storm, with locally higher amounts, into Tuesday."

NWS Issues Travel Warning Amid Snowfall

In a post from the Reno office of the National Weather Service, a warning was sent out for those looking to travel in the Sierra mountain range for action on the slopes.

"A major winter storm is set to hit the Sierra, bringing major travel disruptions. Expect chain controls and possible road closures. Try to reach your destination by early Sunday afternoon before conditions worsen," it read while revealing the expected snowfall for popular destinations.

Donner Summit will receive up to five feet of snow, according to the National Weather Service while Mammoth could see up to 3.5 feet over the next few days.
