Nancy Guthrie Latest: No Suspect Arrest, But Police Make Discovery on Roof
The mysterious disappearance of Arizona grandma Nancy Guthrie continues to take some odd twists and turns.
In the latest development, a drone video showed police making a discovery on Guthrie's roof. According to the Sunday Guardian, authorities searched Guthrie's roof in Tucson after "a neighbor’s observation provided a critical new direction in the investigation." According to Fox News, "Video showed FBI agents removing a mounted, wired device from the side of Guthrie’s home."
No suspect was under arrest, but "surveillance footage from a gas station near Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson, Arizona, home shows investigators on Friday, Feb. 6, seeking information related to a potential suspect," Fox News reported.
"They just showed up,” the gas station employee told Fox News. “They asked if they could see camera footage. They said they were looking for some guy who got away. No description.” Both local and federal authorities viewed the footage, he said.
There were other updates in the vexing case. Here are the latest developments on February 7.
A New Message, Comments About a Potential Suspect & a Towed Car Make Up the Latest Updates
The updates came in a flurry. They include:
- A local television station that previously received an alleged ransom note, KOLD 13 News, received a new message, according to Fox News. In a statement posted on Facebook, the Pima County Sheriff confirmed that a "new message" was being "actively inspected." The contents were not released. KOLD 13 News's anchor told CNN that the new note is shorter, but was likely sent by the same person and doesn't contain a deadline.
- "We sent the IP address where the note came from to law enforcement," KOLD's Mary Coleman revealed on X. "It is NOT the same IP address as the initial note, but it appears the sender used the same type of secure server to hide their IP address. The new note contains something the senders seem to think will prove to investigators they’re the same people who sent the first note."
Some additional details we can release: 13 News received the new note this morning.

- There are reports that a suspect may have been identified, per comments from the president. "We could have some answers coming up fairly soon," he told reporters on February 6, adding, “Yeah. Could be definitive,” when asked whether a suspect was identified. But authorities have not announced a suspect's arrest.
- At the last news conference, on February 5, the Pima County Sheriff stressed that no suspect or person of interest had been identified. The sheriff, Chris Nanos, said then that authorities would not hold another news conference without a firm development, and they have not scheduled one for February 7. And, on February 7, law enforcement sources told CBS News that authorities are "developing good information" but "nothing is imminent."
- Fox News noted that the video showed "a female agent climbing the roof with a ladder before pulling a mounted, wired object from the side of the building." The device "also appeared to be a small black solar panel near the device, also fixed to the roof." Authorities did not confirm what the device is or whether Guthrie herself put it there.
- In another development, authorities towed an SUV from Guthrie's home, Fox News reported. According to CBS News, the vehicle belongs to Nancy Guthrie and is being tested for potential fingerprints and other evidence. Authorities are also "tracking down vehicles that were seen on surveillance cameras in the area the night Nancy Guthrie disappeared," CBS reported.
- Fox News also noted that a "broken floodlight on the rear of Nancy Guthrie’s property has been removed," noting that the FBI previously said one of the alleged ransom notes mentioned a "floodlight."
- "Yeah, the ransom itself. One talked about an Apple Watch, and one talked about a floodlight," FBI official Heith Janke revealed, according to Fox News, describing details from the ransom notes. "And we're not going to go into specifics. It's very important that we keep this investigation moving forward."
Drone footage showed "deputies and agents on the roof and searching the property with flashlights," CNN reported.
The Wired Device May Be a Camera, an Expert Says

What was the device on the roof? Retired NYPD Inspector Paul Mauro told Fox News' Jesse Waters that the device "was a camera that could have been overlooked during the first days of the investigation."
“Apparently, on that roof, the agents recovered a new camera, a camera that apparently they hadn’t been aware of, and they took it into their custody. I don’t know anymore than that as to why it hadn’t been recovered, what it might see,” Mauro said on the show.
CBS News also reported that the device was a camera.

A neighbor named Laura Gargano told CNN that she suggested that law enforcement search Guthrie's roof: “You see in that image, you see how white her roof is…The previous three weeks we had a lot of rain, so it would be normal for a roof to be a little dirty after it rains," she said.
“I had just mentioned to a detective just check out whoever was there… if she had recoated her roof recently,” she added.
Nancy Guthrie's Blood Was Found on the Front Stoop of Her House & a Door Camera Was Disconnected, Authorities Say
The 84-year-old mother of Today Show co-host Savannah Guthrie has been missing since January 31 or February 1. In their latest update, the Tucson sheriff and an FBI official indicated that they are taking three ransom notes seriously, but there are no suspects identified in the case.
The sheriff also confirmed that Guthrie's blood was found on her porch stoop, a door camera was disconnected, and the matriarch's pacemaker disconnected from her Apple watch in the early morning hours of February 1. The motive is not clear; Savannah and her two siblings recorded a video pleading with the kidnapper or kidnappers to make contact with them and offer "proof of life."
Guthrie had dinner with her daughter and her son-in-law, Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni, before going home on the evening of January 31, according to a timeline provided by the sheriff in a news conference. She was reported missing on February 1 when she didn't show up for church.
