Super Bowl LX Will Close Some Legendary NFL Storylines
Super Bowl LX is coming up this Sunday, February 8, and the championship match will conclude several of this season's most exciting NFL storylines.
The game will see the New England Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks in their first match-up since September 2024, when they faced each other in the regular NFL season. But the two teams have a complicated history when it comes to the Super Bowl, having previously played over a decade ago.
Super Bowl LX Is A Long-Awaited Rematch
The Patriots and the Seahawks previously faced off in the Super Bowl XLIX back in 2015, where the New England team stumbled into victory at the last second. A short-yard pass intended for Ricardo Lockette ended up in the hands of Patriorts quarterback Malcolm Butler, ultimately costing the Seahawks the game.
To make matters worse, the Seahawks were the defending champions that year. A victory in 2015 would have made them back-to-back Super Bowl winners—a feat that's only happened nine times in NFL history, once by the Patriots.
This adds a whole new dimension of pressure to this year's Super Bowl, which marks the Seahawks' first time back on the NFL's biggest stage since that fatefull loss. They will be playing the same team that brought them down last time, surely motivating them to bring their very best game.
The Patriots Are Looking To Rebuild After a Rough Patch
Equally, there's a lot of pressure riding on the Patriots to prove that they've rebuild themselves effectively following Tom Brady's retirement in 2023. The team, which had previously been an almost permanent fixture of the Super Bowl with a record-breaking eleven appearances, has been absent from the championship over the past few years.
After appearing three years in a row between 2017 and 2019, the Patriots haven't quite been able to get themselves back to the top of the NFL. In many fans' eyes, their reign had been usurped by the Kansas City Chiefs, who have dominated the Super Bowl throughout the 2020s.
This year's Super Bowl is the perfect opportunity for the Patriots to reclaim their crown and prove that their rough patch has officially ended—and the fact that they could accomplish this by recreating their iconic 2015 victory over the Seahawks is just the icing on the cake.
Darnold & Maye Are Both on Undeniable Hot Streaks
Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold has been passed around plenty of NFL teams throughout the 2020s, unable to find permanent success with any of them. He's been cast off the Carolina Panthers, backup for the San Francisco 49ers, and most recently, traded away from the Minnesota Vikings.
But since joining the Seattle Seahawks last March, Darnold has been unstoppable. He secured the number one seed in the NFL for Seattle after defeating his old team, the 49ers, with a score of 13-3. He even became the second-ever QB to have two fourteen-win seasons after Tom Brady.
Equally, Patriots QB Drake Maye has been unstoppable in his second season with the New England team. His stats this year have been off-the-charts: 4,394 yards, 8.9 yards per attempt, and just eight interceptions throughout the season. He will also be the youngest-ever starting quarterback in a Super Bowl when the Patriots play on Sunday. If they win, he'll surpass Ben Roethlisberger as the youngest starting QB to win the championship match.
This makes Super Bowl LX an undeniable clash of titans. Maye and Darnold are two of the NFL's fastest-rising stars: a seasoned professional who's rapidly coming back from a period of relatively low success, and a young star who's looking to break even more records on his climb to the top. No matter the result, it will be one for the ages.
