Costco Recalls Popular Bakery Item Over Life-Threatening Allergen Risk – What Consumers Need to Know

0 2

Costco is such a popular and trusted retail chain that many people want to know if a new location will be opening near them. Even though the company has earned many of its customers' loyalties, it occasionally issues recalls. The latest one involves a popular bakery item that could pose a potential health risk.

Costco's recall section now states that it is recalling its Mini Beignets filled with Caramel due to a possible health risk. Some packages contain Mini Beignets filled with Hazelnut mixed in, posing a serious risk to consumers with tree nut allergies.

For people with tree nut allergies, unknowingly eating the Mini Beignets filled with Hazelnut could lead to severe reactions if they are not treated quickly. According to the website for the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, tree nut allergies can be deadly. "Along with peanuts and shellfish, tree nuts are one of the food allergens most often linked to anaphylaxis — a serious, rapid-onset allergic reaction that may be fatal."

Anaphylaxis can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure and narrowed airways, making it difficult to breathe. Less serious reactions can cause symptoms like abdominal pain, cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, congestion, shortness of breath, and an itchy mouth, throat, eyes, skin, or elsewhere.

Costco's recall notice states that the affected packages that may feature hazelnut were sold in stores from January 16 to January 30 after they were shipped to the following 23 states.

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Georgia

The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology's website provides instructions for what people with tree nut allergies should do before and during a reaction. They advise people with tree nut allergies to avoid them entirely. If accidental exposure occurs, administer epinephrine immediately and seek professional medical attention right away.
