‘Today’ Show Anchor’s Mom, 84, Is Missing Under ‘Concerning’ Circumstances
Longtime Today host Savannah Guthrie is used to delivering the headlines. Now she is a part of them.
TMZ is reporting that Guthrie’s 84-year-old mom, Nancy Guthrie, has gone missing in Arizona. Late Sunday night, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued a plea to the public for their help in assisting with the search for Nancy, who is described in a flyer as a “vulnerable adult.”
The Sheriff’s Department reports that Nancy was last seen on the evening of Saturday, January 31st at her residence, just outside Tucson, around 9:30 to 9:45 p.m. They are urging anyone who has seen her or who has any information to call investigators.
Sheriff Chris Nanos held a press conference late Sunday night, where he explained that he and his officers were on “a search and rescue mission, we hope.” He shared that they were first made aware of her disappearance around noontime on Sunday. “We’ve pretty much just thrown everything at this as we can,” he explained of the search, which includes authorities from neighboring counties, border patrol, volunteers, and search and rescue dogs.
“Ms. Guthrie is 84 years old and not of good physical health,” Nanos said.
“I don’t need to tell you, this is very concerning to us,” he told the gathered crowd. “You don’t typically get the sheriff out at a scene like this. But it’s very concerning what we’re learning from the house, so we’ll just continue.”
Nanos noted that a homicide team was also analyzing the scene. When a reporter asked for any specifics about what they had found at Guthrie’s home that alarmed them, the sheriff replied that he did not “want to get into those details. I will just tell you that it’s certainly of grave concern to us just what we see there.”

When the same reporter asked if they suspected foul play, Nanos replied: “I’m not ruling it out.” He also said that involving the homicide team was not standard practice.
Nanos did confirm that Nancy Guthrie is Savannah Guthrie’s mother. He also said that, according to the family, Nancy has no cognitive issues such as dementia or Alzheimer’s that might have played a factor in her disappearance.
The Today host issued a statement that, “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”
